In brief
Full side access refers to a container whose long sides can be opened almost entirely. Instead of a fixed side wall, it features multiple swing doors, keeping the entire loading area directly accessible. Depending on the model, one or both long sides can be opened.
The large side opening makes loading and unloading much easier. Goods do not need to be moved through the entire length of the container via the narrow end.
Further advantages include:
Full side access containers are particularly suitable for goods that are moved frequently or need to be retrieved selectively:
In a single-sided version, one long side can be opened. Other models feature doors on both long sides. Additional double-wing doors on one or both short ends are also possible.
Full side access containers are available in sizes including 20 and 40 feet. As High Cube versions, they offer additional interior height.
These terms are not always used consistently in the market. Therefore, the number, position, and dimensions of the door openings should be verified before purchase.
The surface must be level and load-bearing. Even slight deformations of the frame can make it difficult to open the many door segments.
Sufficient clear space is also required in front of the long sides. This is the only way to fully open the doors and operate the container from the side with a forklift.
Can both sides be opened on a Full Side Access container?
Not on every model. Some containers only open on one long side. Others provide full access on both sides.
What is the biggest advantage?
Individual items can be accessed directly from the side. Other goods do not need to be removed from the container first.
Is a Full Side Access container watertight?
An intact container is protected against wind and rain by wrap-around door seals. The seals and door locks should be checked regularly.
Can the container be loaded with a forklift?
Yes. The side openings allow for direct loading and unloading. The floor load capacity and the maximum permissible weight must be observed.
Is Full Side Access suitable for sea transport?
That depends on the specific design. For international transport, a valid CSC inspection and the appropriate approval documents are required.
