What do the container units of measurement TEU and FEU mean?

The abbreviation TEU stands for Twentyfoot Equivalent Unit in German Twentyfoot Standard Container and is an internationally standardized unit in order to:

  • Counting ISO containers of various sizes
  • to describe the load capacity of ships
  • to calculate the capacities of transhipment terminals for container transport

There is also the abbreviation FEU = Fortyfoot Equivalent Unit:

  • 1 TEU is equivalent to a 20-foot ISO container
  • 1 FEU is equivalent to a 40-foot ISO container

As regards the load, 2 TEU therefore require the same amount of space as 1 FEU.

Due to the standardized container dimensions, a 20-foot container has an actual length of only 19 feet 10½ inches (6.058 meters) and not 20 feet, as might be expected, as two 20-foot containers in a row must not be longer than a 40-foot container. The 40-foot container is exactly 40 feet long (12.192 meters).

CSC-Plakette beim Container

CSC-Zertifikat, Prüfung und Bedeutung

Die CSC-Plakette (Convention for Safe Containers) ist das internationale Sicherheitszertifikat für Seecontainer. Sie bestätigt, dass ein Container für den weltweiten Transport per Schiff, LKW und Bahn zugelassen ist. Die Plakette ist fest am Container angebracht und muss jederzeit gut sichtbar sein.

Eine gültige CSC-Zulassung ist Voraussetzung für den internationalen Seetransport und ein wichtiges Qualitätsmerkmal beim Kauf gebrauchter Seecontainer.

Prüfintervalle der CSC-Plakette:

  • Erstprüfung bei neuen Containern: nach 5 Jahren
  • Periodic Examination Scheme (PES): wiederkehrende CSC-Prüfung alle 30 Monate
  • ACEP-System (Approved Continuous Examination Programme): kontinuierliche Überwachung ohne feste Frist, meist durch Reedereien organisiert

Wichtig für die Nutzung als Lagercontainer:

  • Keine CSC-Prüfung erforderlich, wenn der Container ausschließlich stationär genutzt wird
  • Betrifft z. B. Lagercontainer, Materialcontainer oder Betriebscontainer
  • CSC-Plakette ist nur für den Seetransport gesetzlich vorgeschrieben, nicht für die reine Lagerung

Die CSC-Plakette zeigt auf einen Blick, ob ein Container seetauglich geprüft ist oder als Lagercontainer eingesetzt wird und ist ein entscheidendes Kriterium bei der Bewertung von Sicherheit, Qualität und Einsatzbereich eines Containers.
