Hard Top Containers

In brief

‍A hard top container is an ISO-standardized shipping container with a completely removable solid steel roof. It combines the vertical loading capability of an open top container (via crane from above) with the high security, watertightness, and stability of a classic closed standard container. Unlike flexible tarpaulin covers, the removable steel roof offers maximum protection against theft, vandalism, and extreme weather conditions.

What is a hard top container used for?

Hard top containers are the first choice when heavy, sensitive, or theft-prone goods cannot be loaded through a conventional container door:

  • Secure machinery logistics: Loading and unloading of heavy industrial machinery, sensitive plant components, or robotics via crane from above.
  • High-value oversized goods: Bulky, weather-sensitive cargo that requires the theft protection and stability of a closed steel container (where a tarpaulin is insufficient).
  • Automotive industry & turbine manufacturing: Export of valuable large components or pressed sheet metal coils that, due to their weight, can only be placed vertically using an overhead crane in the warehouse.

Terminology: Hard top container vs. open top container vs. dry van

  • Hard top container: Steel roof is completely removable. Maximum security and 100% seaworthiness with full crane support from above.
  • Open top container (tarpaulin): Features a tarpaulin roof. More flexible for slightly oversized cargo and easier roof handling, but less burglar-proof than steel.
  • Standard shipping container (dry van): The steel roof is permanently welded. Goods can only be loaded from the rear through the end doors using a forklift or pallet truck.
