Horse box container

In brief

‍A horse box container is a specially converted, mobile space solution based on an ISO shipping container that serves as an animal-friendly stable, field shelter, or mobile accommodation for tournaments. By combining an extremely robust, weather-resistant steel frame with injury-proof interior lining (wood/rubber), swing-out stall doors, kick-proof walls, paddock doors, and ventilation windows, it creates a durable, easily transportable shelter for horses.

What are horse box containers used for?

The horse box container combines the stability of Corten steel with the flexibility required in equestrian sports:

  • Mobile field shelter & open stable: A weather-resistant shelter for paddocks and pastures that can be set up without permanent foundation work and relocated by crane truck whenever needed.
  • Tournament & event accommodation: A safe, familiar environment for horses during away competitions, shows, or trail rides.
  • Quarantine & rehab stall: A separate infirmary or isolation stable for injured or new horses at equestrian facilities.
  • Combined solution with tack room: Conversion of a 20-foot or 40-foot container into a combination of a horse stall and a separate, lockable tack room for equipment.

Defining the terms: Horse box container vs. wooden field shelter vs. horse transporter (trailer)

  • Horse box container: Fully welded exterior steel structure based on ISO standards. Completely rodent-proof, storm-resistant in accordance with regulations, and vandal-proof; requires no complex building foundations.
  • Classic wooden field shelter: Made of wood. Susceptible to rot from moisture, chewing by horses, and weather damage during storms.
  • Horse trailer / transporter: Intended exclusively for mobile road transport from A to B; it is not designed as a permanent living or resting area.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is the ceiling height of a shipping container high enough for horses?

For conversion into a horse box, we primarily use a 20-foot High Cube container . This provides an interior height of approximately 2.69 m (approx. 8'10"), ensuring sufficient headroom and protection against injury, even for large warmbloods.

How do you prevent horses from getting injured on steel edges or windows?

In professional custom construction, all steel edges are deburred, rounded off, or covered with wood and rubber elements. Windows are made of shatterproof glass and additionally fitted with protective grilles on the inside.

Does a mobile field shelter in a container require a building permit?

Since the container is placed without a foundation and remains mobile via crane, it is considered a privileged, minor construction measure on agricultural land in many federal states. Nevertheless, you should consult with the local building authority before placing it in the paddock.
