IBC Container (Intermediate Bulk Container)

In short:

‍An IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) is a standardized, pallet-sized bulk container for liquids and solids. It consists of an HDPE bladder, a galvanized steel grid frame, and an integrated pallet. The standard capacity is 1,000 liters (300 to 1,250 liters are also available).

What is an IBC container used for?

IBCs are used for the safe transport and storage of liquid or free-flowing materials. Main areas of application include:

  • Industry & Chemicals: Storage of cleaning agents, acids, alkalis, and oils (with UN hazardous goods approval).
  • Food Industry: Transport of cooking oils, syrup, wine, or liquid egg (requires food-grade compliance / FDA approval).
  • Agriculture & Horticulture: Use as a rainwater tank, water trough, or fertilizer container.
  • Manufacturing: Supply of granules and powders in automated processes.

IBC container vs. shipping container vs. tank container

  • IBC container vs. shipping container: An IBC is a mobile container for pallet-sized freight. A sea container (e.g., 20-foot) is a walk-in cargo space made of steel, in which multiple IBCs can be transported.
  • IBC Container vs. Tank Container: Tank containers feature a standardized ISO steel frame (20 or 40 feet) for intermodal heavy-duty transport by ship, rail, and truck. IBCs are significantly smaller and ideal for internal handling with forklifts or pallet jacks.
