In a nutshell
A modular container is an industrially prefabricated, habitable or functional space element specifically designed for modular construction. Unlike standard closed containers, modular containers often feature removable or open side walls. This allows multiple modules to be seamlessly connected to create multi-story, large-scale container complexes – ideal for temporary or permanent offices, accommodation, daycare centers, schools, or sanitary facilities.

What are modular containers used for?
Modular containers are used wherever individual spatial concepts need to be implemented quickly and scalably:
- Modular office & administrative buildings: Open-plan and individual offices with hallways, meeting rooms, and kitchenettes for companies or construction site management.
- Schools, daycare centers & educational facilities: Interim or permanent solutions for classrooms, cafeterias, and sanitary areas during building renovations.
- Housing & accommodation facilities: Residential modules for workers, municipalities, emergency personnel, or as temporary dormitories.
- Healthcare & medicine: Mobile testing centers, laboratory rooms, practice expansions, or nursing stations.
Terminology: Modular containers vs. space containers vs. shipping containers
- Modular containers (construction method): Describes the system principle. Multiple units can be joined together without internal walls to create a single large space and can be expanded as needed.
- Space containers (general term): Refers to all insulated, habitable units. A modular container is a specific type of space container.
- Shipping containers (freight containers): Built from heavy-duty Corten steel for global freight transport. They feature solid steel walls and cannot be joined into large spaces without extensive structural modifications and cutting.
