Refrigerated container

In a nutshell

‍A refrigerated container (internationally known as Reefer Container ) is an ISO-standardized transport and storage container with an integrated electric cooling unit and highly effective polyurethane sandwich insulation. It actively regulates the internal temperature within a range of -30 °C to +30 °C (special models down to -40 °C or -60 °C) with extreme precision. It is used to ensure uninterrupted cold chains in food, pharmaceutical, chemical, and event logistics.

What is a refrigerated container used for?

Refrigerated containers are the most flexible solution for temperature-controlled logistics and temporary storage:

  • Food & Agricultural Logistics: Uninterrupted transport and storage of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, dairy products, or frozen goods.
  • Pharma & Chemicals: Safe storage of medication, vaccines, blood supplies, or chemical raw materials in accordance with GDP/HACCP standards.
  • Catering & Events: Rental as a mobile walk-in cooler for festivals, trade fairs, city events, or during kitchen renovations.
  • Industry & Material Testing: Conducting cold and stress tests for prototypes, electronics, and materials under defined climatic conditions.

Terminology: Refrigerated container vs. insulated container vs. walk-in freezer

  • Reefer container (active): Features an integrated cooling unitthat actively cools or heats to maintain a constant set temperature.
  • Insulated container (passive): Features the same sandwich panel construction, but no active refrigeration unit. Protects goods from outside temperatures only passively.
  • Stationary freezer room: A permanently installed cold storage room within a building. It offers no mobility via truck or ship and cannot be relocated if the site changes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a PTI (Pre-Trip Inspection) for a reefer container?

A PTI is a standardized, comprehensive technical inspection of the refrigeration unit, electronics, fans, and seals. It ensures that the container is operating correctly before loading, maintains the set temperature, and is free of alarm system issues.

Can a reefer container also heat in winter?

Yes. If the outside temperature drops below the set point (e.g., for frost-sensitive beverages or plants in winter), the unit automatically switches to heating mode.

How does air circulate in a reefer container?

The cooling air is pushed by the unit through the grooved aluminum T-floor, rises up through the cargo, absorbs heat, and flows back to the cooler along the ceiling (bottom-air delivery).
