In a nutshell
A side door container is an ISO-standardized shipping container that can be opened along its entire length via swing doors. In addition to the standard end-wall door, the side opening allows for effortless loading and unloading of long, bulky goods using a forklift or crane. It combines the full side accessibility of an open-side solution with the structural stability and seaworthiness of a closed steel container.
What is a side door container used for?
The side accessibility offers enormous advantages in logistics, commerce, and the event industry:
- Bulky goods & machinery logistics: Hassle-free side loading of oversized goods (e.g., pipes, wooden beams, long machine components) using a forklift.
- Order picking & warehousing: Direct access to all stored pallets or shelving units without having to move goods stored deep inside the container first.
- Events, catering & pop-up stores: A popular base container for trade fair appearances, sales booths, mobile bars, or event stages, as an entire long side can be opened as a front.
- Workshop & utility containers: Used as a mobile workspace where tools, power equipment, or construction materials remain clearly accessible.
Terminology: Side Door vs. Full Side Access vs. Open Top Container
- Side Door Container: Features folding swing doors on the long side and, despite the center and corner frames, retains full seaworthiness and high load capacities.
- Full Side Access Container: Allows for barrier-free access without a center post on the side. It offers maximum loading width, but due to its design, it has a higher dead weight.
- Open Top Container: Is open at the top (fitted with a tarpaulin cover) to allow goods to be loaded exclusively vertically by crane or trolley.
