A swap body (also known as a swap container or swap platform) is a standardized, interchangeable freight container used for combined road and rail transport. Unlike shipping containers, it features foldable support legs and thinner outer walls to maximize pallet width utilization. It can be swapped without a crane by simply lowering the air suspension of the carrier vehicle.

What is a swap body used for?

Swap bodies form the backbone of European land and shuttle logistics:

  • Combined transport (CT): Seamless transition between road haulage and rail freight without loss of time.
  • CEP services (Courier, Express, Parcel services): Rapid exchange of loading units at logistics hubs (e.g., DHL, DPD, Hermes).
  • System transport & overnight delivery: The carrier vehicle drops off the loaded swap body at the customer's site and immediately picks up a new one, eliminating downtime during loading and unloading.
  • Retail delivery & trade: Used as temporary on-site storage at retail centers or supermarkets.

Distinction: Swap body vs. shipping container

  • Stackability & crane capability: Shipping containers are built to be extremely robust, allowing them to be stacked up to 9 high on container ships and lifted by top-lift cranes. Swap bodies are lightweight structures and cannot be stacked or lifted by top-spreader cranes (unless they are equipped with special gripping edges).
  • Internal width: An ISO shipping container has an external width of 2.438 m (8 feet) – two Euro pallets (1.20 m each) only just fit side by side. With an external width of 2.55 m, a swap body is specifically Euro pallet dimensions optimized (two pallets across or three lengthwise side by side).
  • Legs & swap principle: Swap bodies feature four integrated support legs. The truck lowers its chassis, drives under the container, folds out the legs, and raises the chassis again. Shipping containers require cranes, reach stackers, or forklifts for this process.
