Swap Body Containers

In brief

A swap body is an interchangeable load carrier for freight transport. Also known as a swap body or swap trailer, it features foldable support legs that allow it to be parked without a tractor unit, enabling the vehicle to pick up other containers in the meantime.

What are the advantages of a swap body?

The swap body separates the cargo space from the vehicle. While the container is being loaded or unloaded, the truck can already move on to its next job.

Other advantages include:

  • Rapid vehicle body changes
  • Parking without a crane
  • Reduced vehicle downtime
  • Optimized for Euro pallets
  • Flexible body types for various goods
  • Use in combined road and rail transport

What is a swap body used for?

Swap bodies are primarily used in European general cargo logistics:

  • Parcel and courier services
  • Freight forwarding and distribution transport
  • Industrial and retail logistics
  • Refrigerated and food transport
  • Furniture and relocation logistics
  • Combined road and rail transport

How does the swap body process work?

To park the unit, the four support legs are folded out. The vehicle's air suspension then lowers the chassis, allowing the truck to drive out from underneath the container.

To pick up the unit, the vehicle drives back under the parked container. The air suspension raises the chassis. Finally, the support legs are folded in and the body is locked to the vehicle.

What types are available?

Swap bodies are available in several versions:

  • Closed swap body
  • Curtain-sided swap body
  • Refrigerated swap body
  • Jumbo swap body
  • Open platform body
  • Customized special body

Depending on the model, doors, tail lifts, roller shutters, or refrigeration units can also be installed.

Terminology: Swap bodies vs. ISO containers

  • Swap bodies: Optimized for European land transport and usually equipped with support legs
  • ISO shipping containers: Built for global transport by ship, rail, and truck
  • Semi-trailers: Feature their own chassis and are towed via a fifth-wheel coupling
  • Roll-off containers: Pulled onto the carrier vehicle using a hook lift

Swap bodies are often wider than ISO containers, which makes it easier to place Euro pallets side by side. However, they are generally not stackable and are not designed for regular sea transport.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is a swap body container the same as a swap body?

Yes. Both terms are generally used for the same interchangeable vehicle body. Other common terms include swap trailer and swap platform.

Can a swap body be set down without a crane?

Yes. Models with foldable support legs can be set down and picked up using the vehicle's air suspension.

Can a swap body container be transported by rail?

To do so, it must be equipped and appropriately marked for combined transport. Handling is usually performed via gripping edges.

Is a swap body stackable?

Most Class C swap bodies are not stackable. Only special models designed for this purpose may be stacked.

Can a swap body be transported on a container ship?

As a rule, they are not intended for standard sea transport. They generally lack the necessary stackability and the corresponding certification.
