The basis for all our containers and container conversions is the standard sea container. Its dimensions are defined by ISO 668. The capacity of container ships is measured in TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit). One TEU corresponds to the capacity of a 20-foot container, while a 40-foot container counts as 2 TEU.
A 20 foot container It actually measures 19 feet 10½ inches (6.058 meters), as two of them together must be no longer than a 40 foot container that is exactly 40 feet (12.192 meters) long.
This is due to international standardizations for container dimensions (ISO standard). These ensure that containers fit seamlessly into transport chains regardless of origin or manufacturer.
The slightly shortened length of the 20-foot containers ensures that two in a row are exactly the same length as a 40-foot container. As a result, loading, stacking and fixing on ships, trains or trucks remain efficient and consistent.
